These medications are either FDA approved for the treatment for alcohol use disorders or they have been shown to be effective, though they have to be prescribed off-label.

    One of three FDA approved medications for the treatment of alcoholism.

  2. Neurontin (gabapentin)

    Widely prescribed off label for the treatment of everything from depression to restless legs syndrome. It has been studied extensively and found to be safe, well tolerated and non-addictive. Gabapentin holds great promise for the treatment of alcoholism.

  3. Topamax (topiramate)

    An anti-seizure medication, Topamax/topiramate has been found to be somewhat effective in the treatment of alcoholism.

  4. Selincro (nalmefene)

    Nalmefene is an opiod receptor antagonist similar to naltrexone. It has been approved in parts of Europe for the treatment of alcohol use disorders. It, like naltrexone using The Sinclair Method, is taken as needed.

  5. Antabuse (disulfiram)

    Antabuse is not a treatment for alcoholism, it is a deterrent. Never the less, it is one of only 3 medications approved for the treatment of alcoholism so we have included it here.
