If you have tried naltrexone please answer these questions.

  1. Do you consider your experience with naltrexone a success or a failure? I took part in 2 naltrexone studies (more than 10 years ago) when I was a high-functioning alcoholic, but well before I was interested in curtailing my alcohol abuse, so neither success or failure.
  2. Did you use The Sinclair Method (TSM) or traditional? Traditional
  3. How much were you drinking before you began naltrexone? 8-20 US units a night
  4. What was your initial dose? 50mg?
  5. Did you increase that amount? To how much? No
  6. Did you have any side effects? No
  7. Were the side effects disabling? N/A
  8. How long did it take before you determined it was a success or a failure? Both studies lasted about 2 or 3 months, neither was really a success or failure.
  9. Do you consider yourself cured? Not when I finished either study, but my motivations at that point were definitely not to quit drinking, they were $, a health checkup, and some free alcohol.
  10. Do you still drink? I have since cured my alcoholism with Baclofen and am sober, but not abstinent.
  11. When did you notice a difference in your drinking? Drinking on Naltrexone very frustrating, infuriating even. I was drinking to combat anxiety and stress and found it very difficult to catch a buzz and calm down. I actually started drinking more to compensate, and then skipped pills and gambled with dosing only on days that I thought the doctors might call me in for random blood tests to check for compliance. If I remember correctly, I dropped out of the 1st study about 2/3 of the way in. So, for me, Naltrexone made drinking less pleasant, but consequently less likely to take it when I was desperate for anxiolysis.
  12. Did you take it with other medications? No.
