I am thinking of using Camparal. Does anyone have experience with it. My Dr. says I have to abstain for 5 days before I can start it. but I know people who used it right away. Any feedback?

I know someone on another forum who used it after detoxing and he had used it successfully.

But he said there's no reason why you can't start it when still drinking

Extract from NCBI said:

Acamprosate is typically initiated 5 days following drinking cessation. However, acamprosate can be used safely with alcohol (and with benzodiazepines), and it can be started during medically supervised withdrawal. Acamprosate therapy should be maintained if a patient relapses to alcohol use. Acamprosate reaches full effectiveness in 5 to 8 days.

So yes, it is advised but not a threat with Alcohol

From what I have read results are considered "modest" - If you try it make a blog :)

Edit: Prescription information http://pi.actavis.com/data_stream.asp?product_group=1928&p=pi&language=E

Odd parts 2.0 Para 3 - No period of withdrawal identified

5.3 - WTF - I thought that was what it was all about?

Having just re sped read it, it does not seem very positive at all - Judge for yourselves

Regards

Hiya, Ceebee and welcome to the forum.

Campral has been shown to be most effective if you take it when you're abstinent. It doesn't work nearly as well if you're still drinking. It also doesn't work as well if you stop taking it, start drinking, and then take it again. So if you're going to give it a try, best to really commit to abstinence.

My doctor prescribed it to one of her alcohol dependent patients who was successful with it.  Unfortunately she stopped taking it and went back to drinking.
